"Although Kauffer's earliest posters were picturesque, they were hardly sentimental; he intuitively found the right balance between narrative and symbolic depiction in stark prefigurations of his later abstract images" (The Essential Modernist, by Steven Heller for AIGA, 1992). As Kauffer recalled in 1937, by 1920, he began to understand the "futility of trying to paint and do advertising at the same time," and he devoted his full artistic attention to poster design. Includes Hatfield (1920) and Reigate (1921).
